converted back to draft, going to see if we can fold the fixes into #944 this week

if not, we can revert and follow-up when the bigger PR is ready

#944 is using existing JS, so if we decide to revert, some changes might be needed there

for easier testing the patch fixes are moved to a separate PR: #961
