This file is used by linux software centers to display and promote the application.
The handling of the .desktop file applies to every linux desktop environment rather than gnome-shell specifically.
Some applications such as software centers will only look in standard linux icon paths to resolve an icon.
With assets installed to standard paths this can be resolved automatically.

Various fixups to conform more closely with modern linux install standards.
Provide appstream metainfo so the application is displayed in various linux software centres e.g. gnome-software, discover, cosmic-store.
Install the .png and .svg icons to standard linux locations as previously gnome-software would not display the icon for the application.
Don't hardcode locations in .desktop file, as the assets are installed to standard paths there is no reason to now.
