App revamp with Compose

We're at a point where fixing one bug introduces many more, and our tests are just not enough to catch regressions. We still rely on manual testing, so while the issue linked to the PR gets tested, other regressions are caught at a much later stage. With our veterans proposing a complete re-write for the app, I'm opening this issue as a parent issue to break things down into self-contained sub-tasks.

Note

This issue is still under discussion and contributors would need context. I would suggest not to pick up Compose migration tasks at this point without opening a sub-issue with clear steps stating what you intend to do and getting a go ahead for the implementation.

Navigation is hard. In theory, the bottom navigation bar should allow access to major sections of the app so the "more" option has to go. The natural place to put the "more" menu would be a navigation drawer (left aligned hamburger menu on main app bar) but material says not to mix bottom app bars with nav-drawers. Currently we host the notifications and the uploads launch icons on the main app bar.

Couple of ways this could go:

• uploads and a "..." menu on the app bar (moving the notifications into the popup menu)
• remove bottom navigation and combine all into a single nav drawer

Removing the bottom navigation would give more screen real-estate over to pictures and maps - the focus being on content. The down-side is that it buries all navigation into the hamburger menu and nav-drawer.

Personally, I prefer 4 items in bottom nav:

• Home
• Nearby
• Explore
• Bookmarks

With a "..." top right with all other items from the "more" option in.

My thoughts on this:

• Home tab looks like a scalable idea, we can extend it beyond personal contributions 🙌🏻
• Should notifications be drawing user's attention? If yes, then I'm not sure if that popup would be right place for it.
• Campaigns could also be thought of as a way of notifying our users? 🤔
• Do we wish to bring limited connection mode back? If yes, one banner at a time might be better.
• Peer review seems a bit like an odd one out among those menu items as of today. Splitting those into categories (similar to our settings page) might help.
• Do we need the page name at the top if we're showing the tab name at the bottom? In case that could make space for one more icon (notifications excluding campaigns)...

Great, so if they skip the login and continue as a guest, we want a prominent call-to-action to get them logging-in and uploading so I dont want to bury the "login" option on the popup menu. Given that we only allow guest users to explore and bookmark items, then I believe the skeleton of the guest experience would look like this

It somewhat breaks the rules - "log in" is both an action and a navigation destination - but I believe the benefits of having it prominently under their fingers on the bottom nav outweighs the purist categorization!
