City of New York Job Postings

  • Updated weekly
  • This dataset contains current job postings available on the City of New York’s official jobs site Internal postings available to city employees and external postings available to the general public are included.

United States Department of Labor Unemployment Claims

  • Updated Weekly
  • The Unemployment Insurance weekly claims data are used in current economic analysis of unemployment trends in the nation, and in each state. Initial claims measure emerging unemployment and continued weeks claimed measure the number of persons claiming unemployment benefits.

City of New York Motor Vehicle Collisions - Crashes

  • Updated Daily
  • The Motor Vehicle Collisions crash table contains details on the crash event. Each row represents a crash event. The Motor Vehicle Collisions data tables contain information from all police reported motor vehicle collisions in NYC. The police report (MV104-AN) is required to be filled out for collisions where someone is injured or killed, or where there is at least $1000 worth of damage.

What is the relationship between total New York City job postings and unemployment insurance claims over the past 10 years?

How do the education levels of New Yorkers seeking jobs change in relation to unemployment over time?

Is there a relationship between unemployment rates in New York and crimes committed?

What are we still working on?

  • We have weekly data on NYC traffic incidents as a way to measure crime, but we are unsure if this is an accurate enough depiction of crime. NYC does have more comprehensive crime data, but it is not updated frequently enough to be relevant for this project.

  • We have information on the education level of job-seekers in NYC based on unemployment insurance claim data, but we do not have a concrete or efficient way to isolate this data.

  • We will be working with three data sets with varying frequencies of collection, therefore we will need to standardize the data to be weekly or monthly.

  • These data sets go back decades and therefore we need to either limit the amount of data we are pulling or choose a different interval for the data we will be using.

  • Due to the size of the data sets and the amount we have, we anticipate that cleaning the data will take the most time and present the most challenge.
