On the release page, look for the file made for Windows. It is often an .exe, .msi, or .zip file. Download the file that matches your system, then save it to a place you can find, like Downloads or Desktop.
- Open the folder where the file was saved
- Double-click the
.exefile - If Windows asks for permission, choose Run
- Follow the on-screen steps
- Open Claude-Code from your Start menu or desktop
- Double-click the
.msifile - Follow the install window
- Keep the default options unless you need a different folder
- Finish the install
- Launch the app from the Start menu
- Right-click the
.zipfile - Choose Extract All
- Open the folder that Windows creates
- Find the app file inside
- Double-click the app file to run it
When you open Claude-Code for the first time, Windows may ask for extra permission. This is normal for a new app. Choose the option that lets the app open.
If the app needs a setup step, follow the on-screen prompts. Keep the default path unless you have a reason to change it.
After the app starts, you can begin using Claude Code from the main window. Common actions may include:
- Starting a new session
- Loading your project or files
- Typing commands or requests
- Viewing output in the app window
- Closing the app when you are done
If you are not sure what to click, look for buttons like Start, Open, Run, or Continue.
When you download from the release page, save the file first and check that it came from the correct GitHub release page. If Windows shows a file trust prompt, review the publisher name and file name before you continue.
Keep your download in a folder you trust. If you want to remove the app later, delete the installed folder or use Windows Apps & Features if the app was installed there.
You may see one of these files on the release page:
.exe— a Windows app file.msi— a Windows installer.zip— a compressed folder that you need to extract
If you are unsure which one to use, choose the file that mentions Windows in the name or release notes.
- Make sure the download finished
- Try opening the file again
- Right-click the file and choose Run as administrator
- Check if your antivirus blocked it
- Right-click the file
- Select Properties
- Look for an Unblock option
- Apply the change, then try again
- Restart your PC
- Download the file again from the release page
- Make sure you picked the Windows version
- Check that your PC has enough free memory
- Open your Downloads folder
- Sort by date
