Anki note overwrite silently fails

Description
I have been using the Anki integration without issue. It can create new notes and detect duplicates. Recently I turned on the ability to overwrite instead of adding duplicate notes, but when I click, it shows the loading indicator for a second and then finishes with no error. The Anki UI refreshes but the note content is not updated. All other Anki functionality appears to be working as expected.

I'm seeing something similar if I have the preview open in Anki for the note being overwritten. But a second click in Yomitan succeeds, so I just always click the button two times as part of my workflow. This is probably a bug in AnkiConnect.

No combination of clicks is working on my end. I've tried with every possible view of the note open in Anki, and it's always a silent failure. No notes ever get updated.

I see. Maybe it's a different issue then (maybe FooSoft/anki-connect#82).
I'd start by inspecting the requests sent to Anki by Yomitan when clicking the button. It should be the updateNoteFields method I think. Look at the fields in the payload to determine whether it's Yomitan sending wrong data, or if it's Anki rejecting the updates for whatever reason.

I haven't checked Anki Connect's source yet, but I can add some additional detail. I have found one limited situation where it works. If I have a note that has a blank meaning field, and I click the "overwrite" button within Yomitan and then immediately click the "view note" button, it will open in the card browser and show the meaning correctly added. It won't work if there's already a meaning set. It has to be blank.

When you go to Anki -> Configure Anki Flashcards, do you see something like this? I think you'll need to adjust these settings.

Thank you! That ended up being it. If I change it to one of the overwrite options, it works.

I can close this issue, however I do think that there's an opportunity for UI improvement here because this was not obvious behavior. I expected that by allowing overwrites via the button, it would actually overwrite.
