Define only a variant and make it discoverable

Hello!

I was reading the User configuration doc page, specifically the section "Using system file names" which says that one can reuse the name of a system file to only define a variant of an existing layout and not a full new layout.

This page then explains how to make new layouts and their potential variants discoverable by adding them to a personal evdev.xml. However, it does not explain how to make a variant to an existing layout discoverable. For example, how would one declare orange from the section "Using system file names" as a variant of the us layout?
