Wagtail is a prominent Python CMS built on Django. It is very community-centric and places a high value on UX, accessibility, and "green" (low-carbon) coding.
Since Wagtail evolved from the Django ecosystem, your Full-stack (React/Django) skills and your bioinformatics performance background make you a strong candidate, especially for their data-heavy or performance-focused project ideas.
Here is a human-style introductory email for Wagtail.
Subject: GSoC 2026 Intro: Siddharth Sivalanka | Full-stack & Performance Optimization
Hi Thibaud and the Wagtail GSoC Team,
My name is Siddharth, and I’m a Computer Science student at UC San Diego. I’ve been exploring the Wagtail ecosystem recently and am really impressed by the community’s focus on accessibility and sustainable coding. I’m writing to introduce myself as a potential contributor for GSoC 2026.
I’m a developer who enjoys the bridge between clean user interfaces and high-performance backends. On the frontend, I’ve built student-focused platforms using React, Redux, and GraphQL. On the systems side, I’ve lead the architecture for a columnar database in C++20 and SIMD, and I recently completed an internship at a bioinformatics startup where I optimized Python REST APIs and ML pipelines for field research.
I saw that Wagtail has a history of projects involving "Greener Coding" and UX improvements. I am particularly interested in how we can optimize the performance of content-heavy sites or improve the data-handling efficiency within the Wagtail admin.
I’ve already started going through the Wagtail contributor guide and am setting up my local development environment to look for some "good first issues" on GitHub. I’m eager to learn more about the 2026 project ideas—specifically any that might involve performance profiling or modernizing frontend components.
Looking forward to getting involved with the community!
Best regards, Siddharth Sivalanka
