Imagine an espresso timer where you start the recipe and the phone starts listening. Once the sound resembling the espresso machine operation is detected, it starts the timer. The timer for the shot pulling could be preset in the recipe options. Once a timer reaches the set number of seconds it turns red or in other way indicates that it reached the set time but not stop. The user should be able to set preinfusion time which would be indicated in the app. I guess as a first version the manual start of the timer would be great as well. However, the benefit of detecting the espresso machine starting the brew is the fact that no time is lost between starting the brew on the machine and clicking the timer.
