What's the status of Sphinx?

Hi,

I'm worried about the status and development of Sphinx?

• There are almost no comments on bug report issues. Bug reports are piling up.
• No pull requests get integrated, despite more and more PRs piling up.
• The maintainer has no GitHub activity since last release in Dezember 2025.
• There has never been a time in Sphinx history of 5 months without any commits on master branch.

For a project with hundreds of contributors and thousands of stars and forks, this is not a good sign...

Maybe someone with more insights can give an update on the project status.

pigweed.dev is a big supporter and user of Sphinx. If you all need help triaging issues, reviewing PRs, contributing PRs, etc. I don't think it would be hard for me to get manager buy-in to help out more in upstream Sphinx.

Sphinx is a mature project, previous releases continue to work :)

Help triaging issues is always appreciated, even leaving a comment that you failed to reproduce and think something is out of date.

Hi, just following up that @jdillard and I have started bi-weekly triaging sessions. Anyone interested is welcome to join us. Aside from the satisfaction of reducing the issue backlog it's proving to be a really effective way to learn new Sphinx features and approaches.
