Copilot freezes Obsidian

Using Windows 11, latest updates (2026-04-21); Obsidian 1.12.7
Dell XPS laptop.
My vault has 1400 notes.

I've set Copilot up to use OpenAI. It works well.

However it slows Obsidian and freezes it often:

• At startup
• When pasting content into a note.
• At other miscellaneous times.
• The Obsidian freezes last 10-30 seconds.

Copilot also need to rebuild the index more than I'd hoped.
If I turn it off to speed up Obsidian, then turn it on, it wants to rebuild the entire index.

Thanks for reporting. A few diagnostic suggestions while we narrow this down:

• Freezes at startup are often the semantic index loading or rebuilding. Try Settings > QA and toggle "Auto-index on startup" off, then index manually on demand. Also confirm the indexer isn't getting triggered by file change events on every paste (large pastes into a long note can do this if the file watcher reindexes aggressively).
• Repeated full reindexing when toggling Copilot on/off is unexpected unless the index was actually invalidated (e.g., switching embedding models, or the index file was deleted/moved). Check whether .obsidian/plugins/copilot/copilot-index-*.json files persist between sessions.
• Please attach a log via Copilot: Create Log File command from a session where the freeze happens, and confirm Copilot version. With 1400 notes the index work should be fast on a modern laptop, so a log will tell us what's spinning.

Could also help to know whether you're on Copilot Plus or free, and which mode you're using (Chat / Vault QA / Plus).

Copilot v3 is in code freeze, so we're closing this as not planned. v4 is a ground-up rewrite and is launching soon, with a very different architecture around agent mode.

If this is still an issue for you in v4 once it lands, please open a new issue and we'll take a fresh look. 🙏
