After building and installing:
ksh --version yields 93u+m/1.1.0-alpha+0f6866b6/MOD 2025-06-22

As someone noted here, Discussion , the ksh version string contains "MOD".

From looking at the source code, e.g. version.h and Mamfile, the "MOD" may be caused by git reporting unclean status. See Discussion for further source code detail.

So, perhaps the .gitignore needs to specify additional files to be ignored such that git status is clean.

The AUR PKGBUILD patches the bin/package script for it to work correctly within the fakeroot environment used by makepkg: https://aur.archlinux.org/cgit/aur.git/tree/PKGBUILD?h=ksh93-git#n28

In short, the file command called by bin/package fails because of seccomp restrictions (file must be passed --no-sandbox for it to work). The patch was rejected upstream, so I resorted to using sed to insert an alias into the script. That of course causes the version string to contain "MOD".

I could use the solution provided in #769 (comment), but I don't like it at all. The failure during bin/package install occurs when file is used during fakeroot, which is not Arch-specific and is available on other distros. This would be better fixed in the upstream bin/package script.
