Linking to individual items when listing multiple content files

I haven't been able to find this in the documentation or looking through the code. When you use the content option "list" how do you link to the individual pages? Are you supposed to hardcode a link? How would you build a typical "Archive" blog widget show past posts? Maybe I'm overlooking something.
