Check that mouse NWB files use Allen CCF (MBAO) ontology terms for location fields #670

Description

@bendichter

Summary

When the species is mouse (Mus musculus / NCBITaxon_10090), the location fields in NWB files should use terms from the Allen Mouse Brain Common Coordinate Framework (CCF) ontology (MBAO - Mouse Brain Atlas Ontology).

This applies to:

  • ImagingPlane.location (ophys)
  • electrodes.location column (ecephys)
  • IntracellularElectrode.location (icephys)

Context

DANDI CLI now extracts brain area locations from NWB files and matches them against bundled Allen CCF structures to populate BioSample.anatomy in asset metadata (see dandi/dandi-cli#1807). Having standardized location values that match the Allen CCF ontology ensures proper anatomy metadata extraction.

Proposed Check

  • Severity: Best Practice
  • When: Species is mouse (NCBITaxon_10090 or Mus musculus)
  • What: Validate that location field values match Allen CCF structure acronyms or names
  • Reference: Allen Mouse Brain Atlas CCF structures, identifiers use the MBAO URI pattern http://purl.obolibrary.org/obo/MBA_{id}
