Indeed, I cannot add: megan_use_gamma_sm = .false. in a B1850C case.
I am getting teh error:

I will summarize a few notes here from our conversation in google chat:

• 282 (same as 280 but vanilla alpha08a) crashed with the same error after 3 years.
• The errors in 280 and 282 occur in crop landunits, so Will recommended the following changes, which revert some crop changes from ctsm5.4.002 to ctsm5.4.003:
