patients table - gender vs edstays table - gender #248

Description

@lacava
  1. Hi there, we're trying to do appropriate reporting of patient sex and gender information from MIMIC-IV and MIMIC-IV-ED and came across this in the patients.csv documentation:
gender
gender is the genotypical sex of the patient.

Is the gender data really coming from genotyping the patients? If so this should be recorded as sex, no?
Are we sure it's not self-report or provider entry? If self-reported, is it possible to know the form prompt or source(s) of collection?

  1. The gender column of edstays.csv has a different definition that I was also wondering about:
gender
The patient’s administrative gender as documented in the hospital system.

Is there any further information on whether this comes from self-report, provider notes, both, or something else?

For reference, trying to follow AMA guidelines on this. Thanks for your help!
