Create .desktop files for wine programs

I feel like I am going crazy on this one. I can't get .desktop files to work for wine programs. Maybe I have the order incorrect or missing something but whenever I create a .desktop file and launch it from the Gnome gui apps menu it just pauses, then closes. Never to open. These are just windows troubleshooting applications on a Rocky 9 OS with Gnome Desktop.

I know regular wine creates .desktop files automatically but I don't see that with conty. and if I used the "conty -d" it creates all desktop files but no wine files. The system is running as root and ALLOW_ROOT=1 is in the environment. I wish they were auto created... I just can't get WINEPREFIX working. So in this example I installed a program called "SearchTools" for cameras and .conty is sitting in /root/Downloads using conty_wine_dwarf I have tried these in my desktop file

1. Exec=/root/Downloads/conty.sh wine SearchTools Works using CMD line not in the .desktop. Just opens then closes
2. Exec=/root/Downloads/conty.sh env WINEPREFIX="/root/.wine" wine Searchtools.exe Same as above results
3. env WINEPREFIX="/root/.wine" /root/Downloads/conty.sh wine Searchtools.exe Doesn't work on either. CMD gives me the error "chdir to /root/.wine : no such file or directly"
4. /root/Downloads/conty.sh env WINEPREFIX="/root/.wine" /root/Downloads/conty.sh wine C:\\windows\\command\\start.exe /Unix /root/.wine/dosdevices/c:/ProgramData/Microsoft/Windows/Start\ Menu/Programs/SearchTools/SearchTools/SearchTools.lnk *** This also doesn't work on either. Although on terminal it gives me a windows looking error of "file not found"***

I know this is a me problem and not understanding something but I am starting to loose more hair with this. I thought it wouldn't be that hard but I guess it is.....for me.

Do other programs in Wine work for you this way? For example, winecfg or notepad?

Didn't even think to try that, I was so focused on fighting with this these. BTW #4 was taken from an older Centos8 install that used wine directly and the EXEC=variable was taken from that with conty.sh added into the mix. (As far as I can tell)

I tried winecfg and again got varied results

1. Exec=/root/Downloads/conty.sh wine winecfg Did not work in .desktop but the command worked in terminal
2. If I try to run the desktop file from terminal ie /root/.local/share/applications/app.desktop it will give me an error wine command not found
3. If I add sh in front so it looks like Exec=sh /root/Downloads/conty.sh wine winecfg It will then run .desktop from terminal and the command will work but it still won't launch from the applications menu in gnome

Thanks! I think i'm missing something easy but I don't know what that is. I am using gnome-extensions to add back in the applications tab up top but gnome-classic should be the same directories though.

Really weird, maybe a bug in that version of GNOME or something. What if you try /root/.Watcher/conty_wine_dwarfs.sh bash -c "wine winecfg"?

Same result. Will open if I run the .desktop file directly from terminal but not using the icon created under applications. So the conty seems to be solving the issue of running these minor windows support tools but these guys aren't techy and I need pretty icons to click to run things.

I also tried to just create a basic script that ran conty wine.

#!/bin/bash
env WINEPREFIX="/home/root/.wine" /root/Downloads/conty.sh wine winecfg

Script runs fine from termnial. when I change the desktop exe to run that script. same results.

Do other (native) applications work in Conty if you run them from the applications menu? Like lxterminal or glxgears or anything else besides Wine.

Also, in the aforementioned script you tried you can redirect Conty output to a file:

#!/bin/bash
env WINEPREFIX="/home/root/.wine" /root/Downloads/conty.sh wine winecfg &>/root/out.log

And see what's in /root/out.log after a failed launch.

Yes, all of the other apps run. terminal, firefox, the scripts I created as well as a hostifi appimage.

Great idea! Strangely it gives me....
"Do not run this script as root:
If you really need to run it as root and know what you are doing, set the ALLOW_ROOT environment variable

Which I have that defined already from the testing.

So I added to the script

#!/bin/bash
export ALLOW_ROOT=1
env WINEPREFIX="/home/root/.wine" /root/Downloads/conty.sh wine winecfg &>/root/out.log

and guess what?!? SUCCESS!

AND if I add ALLOW_ROOT=1 to my ~/.bash_profile allowed the .desktop to run without using the script! Almost there.

Now I know wine typically makes the desktop files uses wine winemenubuilder. I don't see that as active in conty. Is that something that could be added or am I just missing it?

Wine in Conty compiled without winemenubuilder.

Also not sure if it matters but I am using xorg NOT wayland
