Proguard/R8 rules, still necessary?

We see in the documentation that you ask to add -keep class org.json.** { *; } to Produard/R8 rules.
It's very broad!

I think that the origin issue is #326

Is it still necessary?
We try without and it's works. We don't find any dynamic calls in the SDK sources about this.

Thanks for bringing this up @Kevinrob

The reason we include -keep class org.json.** { *; } is because the SDK uses certain classes like org.json.JSONObject in several places—for example, to parse push payloads and metadata (e.g. in IterableNotificationMetadata.kt and IterableUtil.kt). If R8 or ProGuard strips or renames parts of org.json, it could break runtime JSON parsing or reflection-based access.

That said, we’re open to narrowing the rule (e.g., just JSONObject and JSONArray) if it helps app size and still keeps functionality intact. Happy to hear thoughts or test cases where this causes friction.
