🔧 Fixes Applied - Authentication & OAuth

Issues Fixed ✅

1. CORS Errors Fixed

Problem:

  • Access-Control-Allow-Origin header error
  • Backend only allowed single origin
  • Blocked requests from different domains

Solution:

  • Updated CORS configuration in services/auth-service/src/server.ts
  • Now allows multiple origins (localhost, production URLs)
  • Added better CORS logging for debugging
  • Supports credentials and proper HTTP methods

2. Better Error Messages & Debugging

Problem:

  • Generic error messages like "Login failed"
  • No way to know what went wrong
  • Poor debugging experience

Solution:

  • Added detailed error codes (INVALID_CREDENTIALS, USER_EXISTS, etc.)
  • Added console logging in backend with ✓ and ✗ symbols for easy debugging
  • Backend now logs:
    • Login attempts (success/failure)
    • Registration attempts
    • OAuth configuration status
    • CORS blocked origins

3. Toast Notifications Added

Problem:

  • Only basic error divs in forms
  • No success feedback
  • Hard to know what went wrong

Solution:

  • Integrated Sonner toast library (already installed)
  • Updated components/providers.tsx to use Sonner's Toaster
  • Added detailed toast messages to login-form.tsx:
    • Success: "Login successful! Welcome back, [Name]!"
    • Error: Specific messages based on error code
    • Connection errors: "Could not connect to server"
  • Added toast messages to signup-form.tsx:
    • Success: "Account created! Welcome aboard!"
    • Error: Detailed messages for each error type
    • Password validation messages

4. OAuth Implementation Completed

Problem:

  • OAuth routes existed but weren't fully configured
  • No callback page for handling OAuth redirects
  • Missing documentation

Solution:

  • Backend OAuth already implemented (GitHub & Google)
  • Created OAuth callback page: app/auth/callback/page.tsx
  • Handles token reception from backend
  • Fetches user data
  • Shows loading state
  • Proper error handling
  • Frontend OAuth buttons already working in login form

5. Comprehensive Documentation

Created detailed guides:

File Changes Summary

Backend (Auth Service)

  • services/auth-service/src/server.ts - Fixed CORS, added logging
  • services/auth-service/src/controllers/authController.ts - Better error messages
  • services/auth-service/.env - Updated with correct OAuth URLs
  • services/auth-service/.env.example - Added detailed comments

Frontend

  • components/providers.tsx - Switched to Sonner toaster
  • components/auth/login-form.tsx - Added toast notifications & better error handling
  • components/auth/signup-form.tsx - Added toast notifications & validation
  • app/auth/callback/page.tsx - NEW: OAuth callback handler

Documentation

  • OAUTH_SETUP.md - Comprehensive OAuth setup guide
  • QUICK_START_OAUTH.md - NEW: Quick start guide

What You Need to Do Now

1. Set Up OAuth Credentials (15 minutes)

Follow QUICK_START_OAUTH.md to:

  1. Create GitHub OAuth App
  2. Create Google OAuth App
  3. Update services/auth-service/.env with your credentials

2. Start/Restart Services

If services are running, restart to pick up new changes:

# If using Docker
docker-compose restart auth-service

# If running manually
# Stop the auth service (Ctrl+C)
cd services/auth-service
npm run dev

3. Test Everything

  1. Test regular login:

    • Go to http://localhost:3000/auth/login
    • Try logging in with incorrect credentials (you'll see nice error toast)
    • Try logging in with correct credentials (you'll see success toast)
  2. Test GitHub OAuth:

    • Click "Sign in with GitHub"
    • Authorize the app
    • Should redirect to dashboard with success message
  3. Test Google OAuth:

    • Click "Sign in with Google"
    • Choose account and authorize
    • Should redirect to dashboard with success message

Debugging Tips

Check Backend Logs

When you start the auth service, you should see:

🔐 Auth Service running on port 5001
📊 Environment: development
🌐 Allowed Origins: [ 'http://localhost:3000', ... ]
🔑 GitHub OAuth: ✓ Configured (or ✗ Not configured)
🔑 Google OAuth: ✓ Configured (or ✗ Not configured)

Check Frontend Console

Open browser DevTools (F12) and check:

  • Network tab: Should see successful requests to http://localhost:5001/api/auth/...
  • Console tab: Should see login attempt logs and no errors

Common Issues

"✗ Not configured" for OAuth:

  • Update the .env file with real credentials
  • Restart the service

Toast notifications not showing:

  • Clear browser cache
  • Check that Toaster component is in the layout

CORS errors persist:

  • Check backend logs for "⚠️ CORS blocked origin"
  • Make sure you restarted the service after changes

Architecture Overview

User clicks "Sign in with Google"
    ↓
Frontend redirects to: http://localhost:5001/api/auth/google
    ↓
Backend redirects to: Google OAuth page
    ↓
User authorizes
    ↓
Google redirects to: http://localhost:5001/api/auth/google/callback
    ↓
Backend generates JWT tokens
    ↓
Backend redirects to: http://localhost:3000/auth/callback?token=...&refreshToken=...
    ↓
Frontend callback page stores tokens and fetches user data
    ↓
Redirects to dashboard with success toast! 🎉

Testing Checklist

  • Backend service starts without errors
  • Frontend can reach backend (test http://localhost:5001/health)
  • Login shows helpful error messages
  • Signup validates password strength
  • Toast notifications appear for success/error
  • GitHub OAuth redirects work
  • Google OAuth redirects work
  • OAuth callback page handles tokens correctly
  • Dashboard accessible after OAuth login

Next Steps

Once OAuth is working:

  1. Add password reset functionality (email already configured)
  2. Add email verification for regular signups
  3. Set up production OAuth apps for deployment
  4. Consider adding more OAuth providers (Microsoft, Apple, etc.)

All fixes are complete! Just add your OAuth credentials and start testing! 🚀
