Don't install routes to the kernel

I'm working on a project where we intend to use the fpm module functionality to push route updates to a program of our own for statistics gathering and further processing. We simply need the route updates pushed to our application as fpm seems ideally suited. It is undesirable, however, for routes to actually be installed into the linux kernel which Zebra seems to do in normal operation.

Is there a way to tell Zebra to not actually install routes to the kernel?

I could use some direction here please.

there is no way to do this currently. What's the point of even running zebra then? Can I get a understanding of what the actual use case is?

well, you might be able to use a dataplane plugin.
the dataplane uses "plugin" modules to act on the events that zebra sends "down", like route updates. the kernel updates are made by a "kernel" plugin, that's built and used by default. you can have a plugin that runs before the kernel, and that can tell the dplane system to skip the kernel processing. but of course, as Donald says, there are plenty of things that might not work as you wish without real installation ...

Sorry, stupid question. Obviously disabling zebra, as Donald wrote, is the answer.
Usecase is a routeserver. It has a default route, it doesn't need stuff from the kernel.

FYI for noobies: file /etc/frr/daemons line zebra=yes to zebra=no disables zebra.

hmm, ok, but - the OP said they wanted to use FPM to export info from FRR, and that comes from zebra.

Hi! you can run bgpd with zebra and bgp no-rib option in config and routes will not be installed into the kernel (test in 10.2.1)
