Unhelpful error message when password is wrong ("recode 201")

Describe the Issue

I followed the instructions to download from the latest release, cd into - in my case - rayhunter-v0.9.0-macos-arm/, and unquarantined the installer. I was going to plug in to USB, so I connected the device via USB, but then read that that was archived or deprecated or something so I disconnected the device and connected to the hotspot instead. As per the instructions, I verified that http://192.168.1.1/ pulled up the login page. (Am I supposed to log into this portal first?)

Then, when trying to run the installer, it promptly failed with the following.

$ ./installer orbic --admin-password "REDACTED"
Logging in and starting telnet...
Failed to install rayhunter on the Orbic RC400L

Caused by:
    Login failed with retcode: 201

This seems maybe related to the second error mentioned in #693, though that was on Windows. I tried the suggestions in that issue, running the following but receiving the exact same error.

$ ./installer util orbic-start-telnet --admin-password "REDACTED"
Logging in and starting telnet...
Failed to start telnet on the Orbic RC400L

you don't have to log into the portal, but this indicates that the password is wrong. does the password you provided work on the portal?

Yep that was the issue! Just got there on my own a minute ago. I had forgotten to reset the device after purchasing, got a new password and the login credentials worked. User error, but it would be great if a) the error message would let me know that the username/password is incorrect, and b) if the installation page would recommend a reset first. Thanks for your help!

I was having this same generic issue even with the correct password and resetting my Orbic. But thanks to you @uncenter I was able to fix it. The installation instructions show to have the password in single quotes, but your question here had it in double quotes. That solved the issue for me.

@Jeremy-Krall that sounds wrong, single quotes vs double quotes are handled by your shell and should work the same

So the instructions say to hold Shift, Right-Click inside the folder, then click "Open in PowerShell". But for some reason my Windows 11 Pro version doesn't have the PowerShell option in the contextual menu, even though it is installed on my machine. I ended up just using the normal cmd prompt as I'm used to equating that with the Terminal on a Mac.

No problem, #769 was created. I just had the information here because it caused the same error that this ticket was about.

Made a fix to at least indicate it's a PW issue.
