Desktop Plus is such a generic name I have no clue why people are siding with it.

It serves no identity to the underlying application.

Sounds like a generic Desktop Environment (i.e GNOME/KDE)

@thangckt I'm not talking about new users reaching us, We were talking about the current users that might be unhappy with the new name. They can change the name in the .desktop file.

Regarding new users, they will reach us either from desktop/desktop in search for advanced features, or from shiftkey/desktop if they want an up-to-date fork. We are not trying to be an independent Git client, we are a slightly better GitHub Desktop.
That being said, again, if you want to rename the app to "Branched+" or "GitHub Desktop" or literally any other name, you can easily do it through the .desktop file.

I had the same impression about "Desktop Plus". I expect that if you asked someone who wasn't already familiar with these applications what expectations they would have of an app with that name, they might think it added some sort of extra functionality to the desktop of their OS.

The first time I discovered github.com/desktop/desktop I also thought it was something completely different because of the name. The Readme helped...

Well, at the moment we only have one candidate. I think it's pretty good, but if anyone else wants to contribute an alternative, we can vote like we did with the name :)

It seems that someone has been tampering with the poll...
Some hours ago the poll was roughly 65% Desktop Plus and 35% Branched+, with very little movement in the last days, and now suddenly someone has added a bunch of votes to make Branched+ win.

The worst part is that GitHub doesn't seem to provide any functionality or API to view who voted in order to manually discard the bad votes, so the entire result of the poll is now invalid.
I'm not sure of how to proceed now, this is why we can't have nice things :(

In that case, let's make a quick course correction and go with GH Desktop Plus. If that's enough to avoid further drama, then it's fine with me. :)

Sad. Random outside votes definitely should not count. Regardless, id say name it whatever you want really. It's your project. I know I'll be using no matter what it's named.
